Unexpected Adventures: World Travelers Share Their Stories

We asked four travel bloggers and digital nomads about their favorite unexpected travel experiences. From finding new holiday traditions to drinking cow's blood, they share some of their adventures below. 

 

What’s a spot you never planned to visit, which turned out to be amazing?

 

Udaipur, India. The Venice of India. IN-credible place with wonderful people.

Myanmar! We thought it would be a boring country but it turned out to be the best place in South East Asia. The people are friendly, the food is amazing and the landscapes are just breathtaking.

Sicily, Italy! We were planning a trip with our friends and they suggested Sicily. The changing landscapes and beaches of Sicily are incredible, the people, the food, the beaches.. all amazing! What we found most exciting was that the locals spoke little to no English so we quickly learnt how to read an Italian menu so we knew what we were ordering!

Last year totally unplanned we went to Thailand during Buddhist New Year (Songkran) celebration. That was something! It was the coolest celebration that we have ever experienced. Thai people know how to have fun.

What is an unexpected local custom you've come to love?

We're probably going to get some heat for this, but whatever. We really loved all of the time we got to spend with the Maasai people. They taught us so much, but one of the many aspects of their culture that is highly controversial to Westerns is their diet. They have no agriculture, so they must drink cow blood mixed with milk on a daily basis in order to get the necessary nutrients. Of course we had to try it, but when we made the request, we assumed someone was going to just hand over a jug they had laying around. Nope, not what happened at all. We actually walked with a handful of guys to pick out a grazing cow, put a tourniquet around it's neck, and watched while they shot a really shallow arrow into the poor cows jugular repeatedly, until blood came shooting out of it. It was a bit horrifying. Meanwhile one of the other Maasai was milking our cows cow-buddy. They mixed the two liquids together and handed us a little bucket of very, very bloody milk. We each took big gulps and oddly loved it. We're now fully #teamedward.

The 'small talk' in the US is quite nice. We didn't like it at the beginning but now we think it is a good way to connect with strangers.

When traveling Europe at Christmas time (Austria and France), it was actually Christmas Eve that seemed to be the most important day! Everything seemed to close early, it was a big family night and everyone got together... We love this idea so much that we will start our own family tradition of a Christmas Eve dinner with family.

Koh Rong Samloem island in Cambodia. I knew there are some islands in Cambodia, but I never even imagined, that there could be something as beautiful as Koh Rong Samloem as well. Love it!
